Authoritative Data Governance & Scientific Provenance

Lake Maps Hydrologic Data & Verification Methodology

How Lake Maps sources, cross-references, validates, and audits bathymetric soundings, conservation pool elevations, water storage capacities, and geographic boundaries across 30,000+ public U.S. water bodies.

Zero-Fabrication Policy & Audit Trail

Unlike automated scraping tools or generative models that hallucinate lake statistics, Lake Maps enforces a strict Zero-Fabrication Standard. Every numerical metric published—including surface area, maximum depth, mean depth, normal pool elevation, and shoreline length—must be anchored in an official government or peer-reviewed scientific record.

If a hydrographic parameter cannot be verified through official agency records, that parameter is omitted or marked as unverified rather than estimated. Each lake record maintains an immutable record identifier and a visible Last Verified timestamp reflecting the most recent quality-control audit.

Primary Federal & State Data Repositories

All physical measurements and bathymetric profiles are ingested directly from official custodians:

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)Federal

National Hydrography Dataset (NHD / NHDPlus HR): Digital vector geographic representation of surface waters, flowlines, and lake perimeters.

National Water Information System (NWIS): Real-time stage gauges, discharge rates (cfs), and elevation datum soundings.

USGS Water Data Portal
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)Federal

Civil Works Water Management: Operational elevation guidelines, flood control storage capacity, top-of-dam elevations, and conservation pools for major federal multi-purpose reservoirs.

NOAA GLERLGreat Lakes

Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory: Coordinated International Great Lakes Datum (IGLD 1985), water levels, thermocline records, and whole-lake vs international border split accounting.

NOAA GLERL Great Lakes Portal
Bureau of Reclamation (USBR)Western US

Hydromet & Reservoir Operations: Storage volumes, dead pool levels, active conservation capacity, and hourly elevation tracking for Colorado River, Columbia Basin, and Great Basin impoundments.

State Wildlife & DNR Agencies50 States

State Departments of Natural Resources, Fish & Game commissions, and environmental protection agencies provide certified public boat ramp coordinates, fish stocking records, and local watercraft speed regulations.

EPA Water Quality Portal (WQP)Water Quality

Integrated water monitoring data sponsored by the USGS, EPA, and National Water Quality Monitoring Council for trophic state indices and Secchi disk clarity measurements.

Accounting Standards for Multi-State & International Waters

A major point of confusion in public lake directories is the treatment of shared border waters. Lake Maps adheres to transparent accounting protocols:

  • Whole-Lake Total Area: Global rankings and total surface area reflect the complete hydrologic basin as defined by NOAA and the USGS. For international lakes (Superior, Huron, Erie, Ontario), this includes both U.S. and Canadian water area.
  • U.S. Jurisdiction Split: On lake detail cards and comparison tables, we provide the specific U.S. water area alongside the whole-lake area. For example, Lake Superior spans 20,288,000 acres in total, with 13,184,000 acres (65%) lying within United States jurisdiction (Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin) and 7,104,000 acres in Ontario, Canada.
  • Lake Michigan Exclusivity: Lake Michigan is the only Laurentian Great Lake located 100% within the United States borders, shared by Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana.
  • Lake Michigan–Huron Hydrological Connection: While traditionally indexed as two separate lakes by historical convention, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron are hydrologically a single body of water connected at the five-mile-wide, 120-foot-deep Straits of Mackinac. They share an identical surface elevation (577 ft MSL). We note both the individual basin metrics and the combined 29,056,000-acre Michigan-Huron system.

Algorithmic Validation & QA/QC Pipeline

Before any lake record is published to our indexable registry, it passes through our multi-stage Quality Assurance & Quality Control (QA/QC) verification pipeline:

1. Spatial Bounds Check

Coordinates are validated against USGS 7.5-minute quadrangle maps and state administrative boundary polygons to guarantee correct county and state placement.

2. Bathymetric Sanity Check

Maximum depth is verified to strictly exceed mean depth. Elevations are checked against USGS 3DEP LiDAR bare-earth digital elevation models.

3. Human Editorial Review

Recreational facilities, public ramp names, fish species assemblages, and access road directions undergo manual review prior to indexation.
